Day Seven
By 12:30 a.m., everyone is starting to stir. Boston wakes up and sits in his assigned chair, and everyone is starting to take their designated seats. At 1:00 a.m., they are ready to recommence. Thomas reminds them of the history of the information they have gotten off of the phone so far.
Thomas recaps what Paul read to them. First, Paul read them the text messages from the day Caleb died. The second is the brief video message he played of Caleb saying they left the gate open, with him trying to find a way out, then hiding the phone. Third, they heard the voice-activated audio of his death. Now they are getting ready to listen to the first message after they heard Caleb being murdered. Thomas pushes the button.
What they hear next is Mirkov telling the officers to clean up the blood and change uniforms. Then he tells them to cut a piece off the spit bagâ about half an inch. He tells them to hold Calebâs mouth open. âThere, itâll look like he choked on it. Now, re-handcuff him.â Mirkov asks, âWho has his cell phone?â Someone answers that he doesnât have one. âYou imp bastards. They all have cell phones. Find that God damn cell phone. It has got to be here.â One officer answered that he already looked everywhere. âYou imbeciles, we are running out of time. Weâll have to call this in. Weâll take this wagon apart later.â
Officer Schaffer asks, âCommander, why are we filming all of these killings? What if someone else gets their hands on these videos?â Mirkov replies, âIâve explained to all of you before. We are the new patriots, we will be hailed as heroes, and of course, we wonât get paid unless we document who did what.â âOâBrien, you call it in. We all know the story, when you are interviewed, stick to the script, no deviations.â
The phone goes silent. Everybody lets out a sigh of relief that this listening session is over. Patty speaks up. She says, âWah and Aubrey, if it is okay with you, I would like to take possession of the phone. Create a legal chain of possession from when you got the phone and now, and how you got it, and document everybody who has had contact with the phone since you obtained it. I also suggest that you let me legally document the rest of the recordings, of which there appear to be many more.â
âThis will verify the authenticity of the recordings and leave no question of validity.â She said, âI have created a document for you to legally transfer the phone over to me. I have also prepared lines for witnesses to sign.â She asked, âHave you made copies?â Aubrey answered, âYes, we have made copies on two separate laptops.â Patty replies, âGood, that is done.â
Mr. Rabin chimes in, âPatty, I think we need to have security with you until the phone is in your office and placed in a protected location. But I also suggest we donât do that in an obvious manner.
